A major component of Qatar National Vision 2030 is environmental sustainability, and the nation is leading the way in the green building industry. Government, commercial entities, and majority of building materials wholesale suppliers in Qatar are adopting green building principles as part of their commitment to climate change adaptation as world-class sustainable structures begin to appear around Qatar.
The Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) is the driving forces when it comes to green building practices. GORD engages with regional and international organizations in formulating performance standards as well as researching sustainable building materials (read also: Building Materials Perfect for Qatar’s climate). Through GSAS (Global Sustainability Assessment System), GORD sets the benchmark for rating green buildings in Qatar and around the entire GCC region.
Qatar’s push for sustainable development is also backed by a strong regulatory framework. The journey started with Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS) 2010, which introduced the Green Building Code. This was later updated by QCS 2014, adding new environmental management requirements. These include appointing environmental managers on construction projects, enforcing certified environmental management systems like ISO 14001, and drafting construction-specific environmental management plans.
For contractors in Qatar, meeting QCS 2014 standards is mandatory. Although these regulations can sometimes be costly to implement, GORD offers incentive schemes to encourage builders to exceed the basic requirements, offering benefits like additional allowances for a building’s size or number of floors.
Qatar’s green building standards have also gained international recognition. For instance, FIFA endorsed GSAS for the 2022 World Cup stadiums, making sustainable development a core aspect of the projects. GORD is now expanding its efforts across the GCC region, promoting a unified green code and labeling system for environmentally friendly construction materials.
Green projects in the country followed the track set by iconic structures such as the Qatar National Convention Center. As Qatar’s population grows and its environment deteriorates, sustainable construction isn’t an option anymore, it’s a necessity. It shows how the nation too is cognizant of the role of eco friendly practices and has pledged to lend its contribution to the long term benefits.
